To welcome our fourth cohort of researchers we held our induction week in the highlands of Scotland. Representatives from cohorts 1, 2 and 3 also attended to meet the incoming cohort and use the remote and idyllic location for a writing retreat.

Welcome Cohort 3!

27 September 2016

Last week we formally welcomed our third cohort of students.

The academic year starts with our annual retreat to the Burn in Scotland. The new cohort are introduced to our accredited Transition Zone training programme and start on their PhD journeys. Most importantly, the week allows the new students to get to know each other and to meet some of our cohort 2 researchers, who were able to pass on some top tips for success.

Open Afternoon 2016

In June we hosted an open afternoon at Loughborough University showcasing the research areas we are interested in and the projects our students are working on. The event was attended by industrial collaborators new and old as well as staff and students from Loughborough University, including the Vice Chancellor!!

Welcome Cohort 2

26 September 2015

The months of September and October see the start of the new academic years at Heriot–Watt University and Loughborough University and students in our second cohort have now started their PhD journeys.

Their journey kicked off earlier in September by attending our induction programme in Scotland. The weather was overcast but dry with rays of sunshine emerging for our field trip to a local castle. This did not matter though as most of the week was spent preparing for the coming four years by getting to know themselves better and each other. Members of cohort 1 joined the newbies to share their experiences of a year with CDT-EI and it made them realise how much they have achieved in just one year.

CDT-EI on Tour

7 April 2015

The CDT team embarked on the 2015 recruitment roadshow earlier this month. The roadshow kicked off in Greece visiting the National Technical University of Athens. Our CDT Director Prof Paul Conway was invited to deliver a keynote titled “Embedded intelligence to enable operational efficiencies in automotive manufacturing”. He illustrated a number of embedded intelligence projects are currently being implemented in the UK by manufacturers. One project enables real time asset tracking for returnable transit items (RTIs) via the use of RFID tags. Each RTI is assigned a unique identity and the data collected can be used to perform business and process analysis enabling improved supply chain visibility and process optimisation. Developments in RTI intelligence improve functionality, increase location accuracy, allow condition monitoring and reduced RTI losses.

The keynote was followed by a presentation and Q&A session about our Centre for Doctoral Training given by our Deputy Director Dr Carmen Torres-Sanchez and PhD student Dimitris Pantazis.

Next on the schedule was the University of Patras, where the team presented at the National Conference of Students of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Sfhmmy8). The conference is the annual conference of students of Electrical and Computer Engineering and has been conducted since 2007 in various cities of Greece. The goal of the three-day conference is to bring together students of all departments of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics to learn about new technological developments and new labour market challenges.

Ahead of starting their training at Heriot Watt University our first cohort attended our induction week during September 2014. The idyllic location was The Burn, a study centre located in a 200 acre estate at the foot of Glenesk on the southern edge of Aberdeenshire. The induction programme was designed to welcome and facilitate the ‘transition’ the cohort into our CDT and prepare them for the next four years.
